Jonathan Sprinkle

Professor and Chair of Computer Science

Vanderbilt University · Institute for Software Integrated Systems

Professor of Computer Science at Vanderbilt University. Research in cyber-physical systems, autonomous vehicles, and domain-specific modeling.

Jonathan Sprinkle is Professor of Computer Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Vanderbilt University, where he also serves as Chair of the Department of Computer Science. He is a member of the Institute for Software Integrated Systems, where he serves on the Executive Council with responsibility for partnerships.

His research interests are in model-based approaches to cyber-physical systems, and he teaches courses ranging from systems modeling and control to autonomous vehicles and software engineering. In 2022, he led the hardware team that enabled the largest coordinated driving experiment in history—100 cars with customized ACC controllers—on I-24 in Nashville, TN, as part of the CIRCLES Consortium with UC Berkeley, Temple University, Rutgers University, Nissan North America, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Prior to joining Vanderbilt in 2021, he was the Litton Industries John M. Leonis Distinguished Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona, and the Interim Director of the Transportation Research Institute. In 2020 he was named a Distinguished Scholar of the University of Arizona. From 2017–2019 he served as a Program Director in Cyber-Physical Systems and Smart & Connected Communities at the National Science Foundation in the CISE Directorate. In 2013 he received the NSF CAREER award, and in 2012 his team won the NSF I-Corps Best Team award.

Before joining Arizona, he was the co-Team Leader of the Sydney-Berkeley Driving Team, a collaborative entry into the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. In 2004, he led a team from UC Berkeley which autonomously flew against an Air Force pilot in pursuit/evasion games in the Mojave Desert at Edwards Air Force Base.

He graduated with his Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Vanderbilt University, and with his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering in cursu honorum, cum laude, from Tennessee Technological University, where he was the first graduate of the Computer Engineering program and the first Electrical Engineering double major.
